For many people, using a phone before bed has become a daily habit. However, experts state that this behavior is not as harmless as it is thought to be. The blue light emitted from phone screens can negatively affect not only sleep patterns but also mental and physical health.

Researchers at Harvard Medical School in the US have determined that blue light emitted from phone, tablet, and computer screens suppresses the hormone melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone that regulates the body's sleep cycle, and a decrease in this hormone makes it difficult to fall asleep and reduces sleep quality. Dr. Charles Czeisler, a professor of sleep medicine at Harvard University, said, "Looking at a screen before bed tells your brain that it is still daytime. This prolongs the time it takes to fall asleep, shortens the duration of deep sleep, and lowers overall sleep quality."

Experts emphasize that this habit threatens not only sleep patterns but also general health. Prolonged exposure to blue light can cause eye strain, while insomnia can lead to increased stress and lack of concentration. Furthermore, chronic insomnia weakens the immune system and increases the risk of heart disease and depression.

Dr. Matthew Walker, a neuroscientist at the University of California, recommends keeping the phone out of the bedroom for quality sleep. Experts state that stopping screen use at least one hour before bed can return melatonin production to normal. Additionally, using phones with night mode or a blue light filter, reading a book or meditating before sleep, and making the bedroom completely dark and quiet are also among the recommendations.

Research conducted in Turkey shows that more than 80% of adults use their phones before going to bed. This habit causes an increase in problems such as sleep disorders, stress, and morning fatigue.
