As March 4, World Obesity Day, approaches, the World Health Organization has published its obesity map. Turkey's place in the rankings has caused concern.

Making statements on the subject, Prof. Dr. Dilek Yazıcı, Vice President of the Turkish Association for the Study of Obesity, noted that urbanization is the most important cause of obesity, stating that fast food and carbohydrate-heavy eating habits are leading to obesity.

Noting that Turkey ranks first in Europe in obesity, Prof. Yazıcı stated the following:

"As a result of urbanization and the acceleration of life, there is a shift toward fast food consumption; calorie-rich fast food, pastries, or packaged foods are preferred more because they are both easily accessible and quickly consumed. Of course, alongside this, there is a significant segment of the population that both eats too much and unhealthily, does not move much, is accustomed to handling many tasks through technological devices, and works in front of a computer for hours without moving."

CALL FOR MOBILIZATION

According to a report by Hürriyet; Prof. Dr. Oktay Banlı, President of the Turkish Obesity Surgery Foundation, who described obesity as the pandemic of the era, stated that one-third of the adult population has a weight problem, adding, "There is a serious increase in both children and adults. If it continues like this, more than 50 percent of our population will be obese in 20-25 years. We currently have 3.5-4 million people living with obesity at a level that requires surgery.

Diabetes has also increased 3-4 fold. There must be a total mobilization starting from schools. We go everywhere by car or shuttle. We need to walk a little. We wander through many shops in shopping malls at 10-meter intervals. We don't even move to go shopping. We must learn to use our bodies and to move," he said.

WHAT SHOULD BE DONE AGAINST OBESITY?

Experts offer the following warnings against obesity:

Do not eat in front of a screen: Not only children but also adults experience screen addiction, and we do not know what we are eating while in front of a screen. One should stay away from screens while eating.

Exercise: Sports are the best prescription against obesity. Children must also acquire the habit of exercising.

Limit car use: One should walk as much as possible and not go everywhere by car.

Eat naturally: We must learn to eat naturally, organically, and in a balanced way.

If dieting doesn't work: If weight loss is not achieved with normal diets, obesity treatment should be considered.
