Authorities have announced that coronavirus drugs no longer in use for humans will be made available to treat cats in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and the Greek Cypriot Administration, where thousands of cats have died due to Covid.
Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), a type of coronavirus that does not transmit to humans, is ravaging the Mediterranean island's prolific cat population.
A statement from the cabinet said, "Stocks of preparations used to treat human coronavirus cases that are no longer in use can be made available."
It was emphasized that the drugs, in the form of anti-Covid pills, will be provided through veterinary services.
Animal activists have warned that the island is turning into an island of dead cats, stating that the disease may have killed a large portion of the population of one million.
CLAIMS THAT 300 THOUSAND CATS HAVE DIED
However, the island's veterinary association argues that reports of as many as 300,000 cat deaths are exaggerated, stating that the number is below 10,000.
