A long-term scientific study points out that the habit of frequent and long daytime naps in the elderly may be a sign of underlying health problems and an increased risk of early death.

While short daytime naps taken to temporarily relieve feelings of fatigue are often seen as harmless, a new study that has made waves in the medical world has revealed that this habit may be more dangerous than previously thought. The study, which spanned many years and covered individuals over the age of 56, found that the risk of death increases in those who nap frequently and for long periods during the day.

According to the study's findings, untimely naps, especially between 9:00 AM and 7:00 PM, can act as an alarm for various health problems that have not yet emerged or been noticed by the body. Scientists state that an increase in the need for daytime napping may indicate the onset of neurological disorders and cardiovascular diseases.

Researchers tracked the sleep habits of 1,338 adults over 19 years. The results showed strong links not only to a decrease in energy but also to cardiovascular diseases and nervous system disorders in people who nap frequently during the day. It is emphasized that this situation, which becomes a habit especially in later years, is one of the first signs of deteriorating health.

One of the most striking findings was the intense desire to sleep felt in the early morning hours. According to experts, these naps may be a sign of inflammatory processes such as 'chronic inflammation' progressing insidiously in the body. Chronic inflammation causes a person to feel tired throughout the day and need more sleep.

Extensive analyses conducted with the support of Harvard Medical School similarly reveal that long and irregular daytime naps are not just caused by a poor night's sleep. According to the research, such sleep disturbances can be a manifestation of deep health problems such as depression, metabolic issues, and disruption of the biological clock.

Furthermore, scientists underline that regular monitoring of napping habits could be useful for early diagnosis. In this context, the importance of utilizing wearable technological devices and smartwatches is increasingly growing. Dr. Chenlu Gao stated on this subject, "Napping patterns can be used as an early warning system for declining health. Changes in heart health and brain function, in particular, can be detected through disruptions in sleep habits before they show clinical symptoms."

Experts state that it is of vital importance for older adults to consult a specialist if they observe a change in their frequent or long-term daytime napping habits.
