Wearable sensor project marks a new era in glucose monitoring

A next-generation glucose sensor project, prepared by the Sakarya University of Applied Sciences (SUBÜ) and aimed at resolving the issues of current sensors used in diabetes management, has been granted support under the TÜBİTAK 1001 program.

The study titled "Development of Covalent Organic Framework-Supported Glucose Sensor Architecture," led by Prof. Dr. Mustafa Can, a faculty member at the SUBÜ Faculty of Technology, has entered the scientific testing phase. Within the scope of the project, it is planned to overcome technical problems such as enzyme instability and low signal stability in current sensors used in diabetes management through a new architecture based on "Direct Electron Transfer (DET)."

The new architecture, designed with a combination of covalent organic frameworks (COF)—which are advanced functional materials—and conductive polymer (PEDOT), will form the basis for Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) systems, as well as wearable and implantable medical devices. This technology will pave the way for the production of fully biocompatible and high-precision biosensors.

Students are involved in the R&D process

In the project, which is being conducted with an interdisciplinary approach, undergraduate, master's, and doctoral students are serving as researchers alongside the academic staff. The project, which is structured as a comprehensive engineering process from the synthesis stage to biocompatibility tests, aims to reduce Turkey's foreign dependency in the field of medical device technologies.
