WHO declares end of hantavirus outbreak linked to MV Hondius cruise ship

The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced that the hantavirus outbreak linked to the Dutch-flagged passenger ship "MV Hondius" has ended. In his assessment during a weekly press conference, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that the last contact of a person exposed to the virus had completed their quarantine period, tested negative, and returned home.
Ghebreyesus noted that no new cases have been reported since May 25, stating, "Therefore, we are pleased to announce that the WHO considers the outbreak to be over."
According to WHO data, the total number of cases in the outbreak remained at 13. Three of these cases resulted in death. During the outbreak, more than 650 contacts were identified and monitored by health authorities in 33 countries and territories.
Ghebreyesus emphasized that despite the end of the outbreak, the WHO will continue its work with governments and partner organizations to improve knowledge about hantavirus. The WHO Director-General also thanked the countries that supported the response under the International Health Regulations.
