Dr. Zeliha Aksaz Şahbaz, the Republican People's Party (CHP) Deputy Chair responsible for the Ministry of Health and Policies, issued a written statement regarding the health status of Beylikdüzü Mayor Mehmet Murat Çalık in prison.
Şahbaz stated that Çalık had previously battled leukemia twice and salivary gland cancer once, which has left his immune system weak and requiring specialized medical monitoring.
Noting that Çalık has lost 20 kilograms under prison conditions and that his immune system is suppressed—a situation documented by medical reports—Şahbaz said that Çalık has been held for 130 days without an indictment being prepared and without concrete evidence.
Şahbaz expressed that reports from Atatürk Training and Research Hospital recommending his release were ignored, and that he was subjected to a traumatic process by being referred to the Council of Forensic Medicine.
Şahbaz stated that while Çalık was receiving treatment in the hospital, he was sent back to prison without any humanitarian or legal justification, and is currently being held under heavy isolation in unhealthy conditions.
Emphasizing that prolonged isolation would be considered torture and ill-treatment, Şahbaz stated that this situation is a clear violation of both the Constitution and international human rights conventions.
Drawing attention to the severity of Çalık's health condition, Şahbaz stated that his detention has turned into a form of punishment that threatens his right to life, and said he must be released immediately. Furthermore, she expressed that Çalık should live in a healthy environment with his family and that a fair trial process must be conducted.
Emphasizing the sanctity of the right to life as the Republican People's Party, Şahbaz stated that they will not allow Çalık to lose his health and that they will stand by him until the end.
