First hearing in the Atlas Çağlayan murder case: Suspect minor to appear in court today

The judicial process for the murder of Atlas Çağlayan, which occurred in Güngören, Istanbul, and caused deep sorrow in the public, begins today. In the hearing to be held at the Bakırköy 2nd Juvenile High Criminal Court, the primary suspect in the incident, 14-year-old E.Ç., will present his defense before the court for the first time. Due to high interest, the trial will take place in the conference hall within the courthouse.

The indictment prepared by the Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor's Office states that the incident occurred on January 14 at a cafe located in the Mehmet Nesih Özmen neighborhood. According to the allegations, during an argument between two groups, E.Ç. stabbed Atlas Çağlayan, and the young man could not be saved despite being rushed to the hospital.

A report prepared by the Council of Forensic Medicine determined that E.Ç. had sufficient capacity to perceive the legal consequences of his actions and to direct his behavior. Furthermore, the prosecution stated that E.Ç. could be held responsible for the crimes of "intentional killing," "threat with a weapon," and "violation of Law No. 6136" at the time of the offense.

It was recorded that Atlas Çağlayan's death was caused by internal bleeding following the injury inflicted by a sharp object. Investigations conducted as part of the inquiry found no evidence of any prior hostility between Atlas and E.Ç. However, the indictment detailed that photos of firearms and pocket knives were found on E.Ç.'s mobile phone.

It was noted that Atlas Çağlayan, who had not yet turned 18 at the time of the incident, was also considered a child under the Turkish Penal Code, thus classifying the crime of "intentional killing against a child" as an aggravated offense. The indictment emphasized that E.Ç. struck Atlas three times in the chest and heart with a knife.

CONCERNING RISE IN CRIME RATES AMONG YOUTH

In addition to the rising crime rates across Turkey in recent periods, there is a notable increase in cases of gang formation and involvement in crime at a young age. According to experts, many factors ranging from family to environment and education play a role in children being dragged into crime; however, the failure to implement an effective preventive mechanism leads to the spread of youth gangs. Events of this nature, which have recently come to the fore with the murder of Atlas Çağlayan, cause great concern throughout society and point to the need for comprehensive measures to be taken by the authorities.
