CHP's presidential candidate and Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu reacted to the arrest of comedian Deniz Göktaş, which was justified by his stand-up show titled "Ölü Deniz" (Dead Sea).
In his statement, İmamoğlu said, "This is the role of humor; it criticizes politicians, the government, and the opposition alike."
The process that came to the fore due to Göktaş's stand-up show has once again brought the discussions on the critical scope of humor and freedom of expression to the forefront.
It was stated that Göktaş was arrested on charges of "inciting the public to hatred and hostility or insulting them" and "insulting the President."
In a message shared by the Presidential Candidate Office account, İmamoğlu argued that the government is "hostile toward its intelligent, smart, and productive citizens and youth," adding, "They cannot steal our joy!"
