Significant developments are taking place across Turkey following the tightening of penalties for the crime of carrying unlicensed weapons.

With the amendment made to Law No. 6136 on Firearms, Knives, and Other Instruments, serious sanctions have begun to be applied to individuals who carry or possess unlicensed weapons.

In this context, lawyer Tarık Ziya Karanfil made important statements regarding the issue.

“THE PENALTY FOR CARRYING AN UNLICENSED WEAPON STARTS AT TWO YEARS”

Lawyer Tarık Ziya Karanfil stated that with the amendment to Law No. 6136, the lower limit of the prison sentence for the crime of carrying an unlicensed weapon has been set at two years.

Karanfil used the following expressions:

“With the latest regulation of Law No. 6136, a prison sentence of 2 to 4 years is stipulated for individuals who carry unlicensed weapons. Furthermore, licensed weapon owners must also be careful; carrying weapons with a possession license is also against the law and is punishable.”

“ARREST WARRANTS HAVE BEGUN TO INCREASE”

Following the change in the law, operations against individuals carrying unlicensed weapons have gained momentum across the country. Karanfil emphasized that courts are now taking tougher measures regarding this crime:

“Following the latest regulation, a serious increase in arrest warrants is being observed across Turkey. Carrying an unlicensed weapon is seen as an act that threatens public peace, and judicial authorities are taking more deterrent decisions on this matter. Inspections have intensified, especially in large cities. Our citizens must be very careful about this.”

Important Warnings for License Holders

Karanfil warned not only those carrying unlicensed weapons but also licensed weapon owners:

“Individuals who do not track their license expiration dates or fail to renew them are also at serious risk. Weapons with expired licenses are also legally considered unlicensed weapons, and in this case, you may face criminal sanctions. Additionally, carrying a weapon with a possession license also constitutes a crime.”

“THE PURPOSE OF THE LAW IS TO ENSURE PUBLIC SAFETY”

Stating that the purpose of this regulation is to increase public safety, Karanfil made the following assessment:

“Firearms can pose a major threat to society when not properly regulated. With this regulation, the legislator has aimed to protect public peace and ensure deterrence. Our citizens need to support both the laws and public authorities on this matter.”
