The Aachen Regional Court has announced its verdict in the trial of a 44-year-old nurse charged with 10 counts of murder and 27 counts of attempted murder. The court determined that the defendant injected terminally ill patients with lethal doses of sedatives and painkillers in a palliative care unit between December 2023 and May 2024.
The indictment stated that the defendant administered these drugs to patients during night shifts to reduce his workload. However, the defendant did not accept the charges during the trial process, arguing that he did not act with the intention of shortening the patients' lives.
While defense attorneys requested the defendant's release, the prosecution argued that a life sentence should be imposed. The court accepted the prosecution's request and sentenced the defendant to life in prison.
