Minister Tunç's statement on 'new constitution': 'It has become a patchwork quilt'

Minister of Justice Yılmaz Tunç spoke at the TBMM Planning and Budget Committee regarding the Ministry of Justice's 2024 budget. While stating, "It is essential that the current Constitution, prepared during a coup era, be renewed within the framework of rights and freedoms with an understanding based on the rule of law," Tunç continued his remarks as follows:

"Although we have made significant progress with both the renewal of our laws and the reforms we have carried out in the Constitution, it is clear that we still need a new Constitution. It is essential that the current Constitution, prepared during a coup era, be renewed within the framework of rights and freedoms with an understanding based on the rule of law. To date, 184 amendments have been made to our Constitution through 19 amendment packages, touching upon more than 200 points. Over time, the uniformity of our Constitution has been disrupted, and it has effectively become a patchwork quilt. This is a fact accepted by everyone. In this regard, it is our debt to our nation to create a new and civil constitution that is democratic, inclusive, prioritizes fundamental rights and freedoms, incorporates the views of every segment of society, and will be adopted with a broad consensus."
