Statement from the Istanbul Bar Association regarding Murat Çalık
Drawing attention to the situation of detainees experiencing health problems in prison, the Istanbul Bar Association emphasized that the right to life must not be violated. The Bar called for an end to unlawful detentions.

The Istanbul Bar Association has drawn attention to the serious health problems faced by Beylikdüzü Mayor Mehmet Murat Çalık in prison, stating that this situation is in violation of the Constitution and the European Convention on Human Rights.
The Bar stated that the continuation of Çalık's detention despite his health problems is unacceptable from both a legal and humanitarian perspective.
The statement noted that keeping Çalık in prison despite the life-threatening nature of his condition increases the criminal and legal liability of public officials and gives rise to the state's legal obligations. Citing Articles 17 and 19 of the Constitution and Articles 2 and 5 of the European Convention on Human Rights, the Bar emphasized that unfair and unlawful detentions must be brought to an end.
The Bar stated that the situations of not only Çalık, but all sick prisoners who are unfit to remain in prison, as well as those who have been unjustly detained as a result of operations targeting municipalities, must be re-evaluated. Pointing out that detention is an exceptional measure, the Bar demanded that these individuals be released immediately.
The Istanbul Bar Association announced that it will closely monitor judicial processes and detention practices.
