A 3-month profession: It earns 6-7 thousand liras a day

In Yozgat, one of Turkey's major grain production centers, straw baling operations have gained momentum in fields where the grain harvest has been completed. In the Yerköy district, the straw left in the fields after the combine harvesters is being packaged by baling machines and loaded onto trucks.

During this busy period that begins after the harvest, seasonal agricultural workers, particularly those coming from the Çağlayancerit district of Kahramanmaraş, are working. The workers collect the straw bales from the fields and load them onto vehicles to be delivered to livestock businesses.

Stating that this seasonal work is an important source of income during the summer months, the workers express that their daily earnings range between 6 and 7 thousand liras. Because it provides a high income in a short time, the job of transporting bales is also among the preferred jobs for students and young people waiting for job appointments.

Veli Onaran, who came from Kahramanmaraş to Yozgat to work, said that they transport bales in different regions throughout the season, stating, "We transport from the fields to the farms. We carry a thousand a day. Each truck carries a thousand bales. This work starts in June and ends in the middle of August."

Sefa Kuzu, on the other hand, stated that they spend their summer vacation working, saying, "We earn our pocket money this way during summer vacations while we are in school. I was in Adana Çukurova, but I graduated. I am waiting to be appointed. Our daily wages here come to 6-7 thousand liras. My friends are also generally students. We spend our summer vacation this way. It is a good income in a short time."
