Six-month-old macaque Punch, who lives at the Ichikawa City Zoo in Japan, became famous in a short time thanks to images shared on social media. Abandoned by its mother after birth, Punch was taken into care by zoo staff.
In videos circulating on social media, Punch is seen hugging its caregivers and constantly carrying a plush toy with it. The baby macaque does not leave this toy behind when it is left alone.
Officials state that the mother did not show interest in her baby due to it being her first birth and the effect of summer heat. When other monkeys in the cage did not approach Punch either, staff gave the baby a plush toy to keep it company.
The orange-colored orangutan plush soon became identified with Punch. The toy, referred to as "Punch's mother" on social media, drew attention as the number of posts increased.
Punch's story has also affected toy sales. The plush orangutan was offered for sale with special labels in some countries and saw high demand. It is reported that sales of the product are also increasing in Turkey.
In the images shared by the zoo, Punch is seen hugging its plush toy while sleeping or carrying it around during the day. While the baby macaque has become the mascot of the zoo, its story continues to attract interest on social media.
