World-renowned actress Angelina Jolie spoke in an interview with Syrian journalist and filmmaker Waad Al-Kateab regarding the film "We Dare to Dream," which she directed.
Explaining that she began working internationally under the umbrella of the United Nations (UN) nearly 20 years ago and had goals regarding human rights, Jolie said, "There was an idea of human rights. I had this idea that rights are defined, that you stand up for things, and that there would be a reaction when things that needed to be done were not done. I really thought it was like that. I even thought the United Nations was like that."
Jolie expressed that the events she witnessed over time helped her understand the injustice in the world, noting, "Human rights exist, but for whom? Sometimes they are for these people, sometimes for those. But sometimes, for one group, they do not exist at all."
Noting that justice and human rights do not work the same for everyone and that some people are not even held accountable for the crimes they commit, Jolie said, "While some people are asked to account for their crimes, others are untouchable. This is the ugly face of our world that we are witnessing more and more each day."
"GAZA HAS BEEN AN OPEN-AIR PRISON FOR NEARLY 20 YEARS AND IS RAPIDLY BECOMING A MASS GRAVE"
On the other hand, regarding Israel's attacks on Gaza, Jolie had stated in a post on the social media platform Instagram on November 1, "This is the deliberate bombing of a trapped population who have nowhere to flee. Gaza has been an open-air prison for nearly 20 years and is rapidly becoming a mass grave."
Drawing attention to the killing of children and families in Gaza, Jolie had said, "Millions of Palestinian civilians—children, women, families—are being collectively punished and dehumanized, all while being deprived of food, medicine, and humanitarian aid against international law, with the active support of many governments as the world watches."
In her post, Angelina Jolie had included the words, "By refusing to demand a humanitarian ceasefire and blocking the UN Security Council from imposing one on the parties, world leaders are also complicit in these crimes."
