Backlash against 'single life' comments following Serhat Kılıç's death

Following the passing of actor Serhat Kılıç, comments made on social media regarding single life have sparked controversy. Actor and comedian Kaan Sekban reacted to these comments, stating that people should not be judged based on their choices regarding marriage and having children.

In a post on his social media account, Sekban criticized the generalizations made about people who choose a single life in the wake of Kılıç's death. Stating that "being single does not mean being alone," Sekban emphasized that an individual can also build strong relationships through their social circle, friendships, and companions.

Noting that marriage and having children can be a valuable life experience for those who desire it, Sekban opposed the idea of presenting this as a mandatory path for everyone. Criticizing this approach, Sekban remarked, "Someone once said, 'Get married even if you know you will be unhappy.' That must mean they are quite unhappy themselves."

"GENERALIZATIONS CANNOT BE MADE FROM ISOLATED INCIDENTS"

Stating that broad social conclusions should not be drawn from isolated incidents, Sekban said, "One cannot start from Kılıç's passing and say, 'You modern people will die alone, hurry up and have kids,' nor can one talk nonsense by saying, 'Having children is a huge risk, watch out,' based on Güllü."

Saying that some people may feel unhappy and trapped in their marriages, Sekban expressed that he does not find it right for single people to be targeted with terms like "pitiful" or "pathetic." According to Sekban, these matters should be viewed as life decisions that everyone makes according to their own circumstances.

At the end of his post, touching on the importance of building healthy bonds with people who are good for one's life, Sekban stated that marriage is not the only way to achieve this. Sekban expressed his wish that the right people—whether as a spouse, lover, partner, friend, or companion—cross everyone's path.
