There is a letter Cevat Şakir wrote to Azra Erhat in which he describes the night of the murder. The famous writer says that he did not commit the murder intentionally. Here is what was written in the letter:

“The argument was about very complicated subjects and was very intense. Because my father was always afraid of an assassination attempt at the farm, he kept numerous pistols and weapons with him. The argument reached such a point that he fired at me. I grabbed a pistol there at random - but I read it on his face as his hand went toward the pistol - and I fired toward him, without aiming. First his, then immediately mine... It was almost at the same time. This is indisputable, otherwise, I would have been the one who died. No, he died.”
