Coffee consumption in Turkey has increased 6-fold in 15 years: '2.5 kilograms per capita...'

Coffee consumption in Turkey has shown a rapid rise over the last 15 years. Consumption, which was at the level of 350-400 grams per capita annually at the beginning of the 2010s, is expected to reach the 2.2-2.5 kilogram range by 2026.

Changing consumer habits, the increased visibility of coffee in social life, and the proliferation of coffee shops have supported the growth of the sector. It is noted that some consumers, who are limiting their dining-out expenses due to rising living costs, are choosing coffee shops for their social interactions.

The increase in demand has also been reflected in import data. According to the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) General Trade System data, coffee imports in the first five months of 2026 increased by 3.7 percent compared to the same period last year, reaching 50 thousand 219 tons. During this period, 398 million 298 thousand dollars were paid for imports.

125 THOUSAND TONS OF COFFEE IMPORTED

In the full year of 2025, Turkey imported 125 thousand tons of coffee. The value of this import was 909.2 million dollars. Compared to the previous year, the value of coffee imports increased by 82.9 percent, and the quantity increased by 23.6 percent.

Coffex İstanbul Founder Niyazi Çoşkunsoy stated that the spread of the third-wave coffee culture, the growing interest of young people in coffee, and coffee becoming central to social life have been effective in the rise in consumption.

According to Çoşkunsoy, as of 2025, annual per capita coffee consumption reached an average level of 1.5 kilograms. Stating that consumption has increased approximately fourfold in the last 10 years, Çoşkunsoy noted that the expansion of chain coffee shops, the strengthening of out-of-home consumption, the growth of e-commerce, and easier access to professional home-brewing equipment have also supported this increase.
