Conjoined twins speak out: 'We don't miss our independence'
23-year-old conjoined twins Carmen and Lupita Andrade answered the questions they are asked most often. The sisters, who share organs and lower limbs, said, "We have been conjoined our entire lives, so we don't miss our independence." Originally from Mexico, the twins were told by doctors when they were born that they would only live for a few days before moving to the USA.
In a TikTok video that has been viewed more than 9.8 million times, Carmen and Lupita said, "One of us can be awake while the other is asleep. Since we have two separate brains, one of us might be tired while the other is not."
Carmen stated, "We share a bloodstream, so if one of us dies, eventually sepsis will set in and the other will die within hours or days."
Carmen has a boyfriend named Daniel.
'I HAVE SOCIAL ANXIETY'
Stating that they have been together for three years, Carmen said, "I never tried to hide the fact that I am a conjoined twin, which led to me receiving a lot of messages from men with fetishes. Daniel never asked any questions about my condition. I have social anxiety and have had to cancel dates at the last minute, but I felt calm when I went to meet him."
Carmen, who mentioned that both of them have endometriosis and pelvic pain, said that they actually share a single reproductive system but that she and Lupita are medically unable to have children.
When asked if they ever want to be separated, Carmen and Lupita replied, "We have been conjoined our entire lives, so we don't miss our independence. It's all we've ever known, right?"
