When legendary Turkish cinema actress Fatma Girik passed away on January 24, 2022, she left behind a controversial inheritance. Girik had bequeathed her entire estate to her niece, Fatma Ahu Turanlı, while disinheriting her brother, Günay Girik. In 2023, Günay Girik filed a lawsuit to contest the will, alleging that his sister had lost her mental capacity during her final days.
WITNESS TESTIMONIES HEARD IN COURT
During the hearing at the Bodrum Civil Court of First Instance, testimonies were taken from journalist Seyhan Erdağ and Hakan Kösel, who were among the witnesses for Fatma Ahu Turanlı. Seyhan Erdağ stated that Fatma Girik was of sound mind in her final years and that she never saw Günay Girik by his sister's side. Erdağ said, "Ms. Fatma was saddened by her brother's indifference."
Hakan Kösel emphasized Ahu Turanlı's devotion to Fatma Girik, stating, "Ms. Ahu saw Ms. Fatma as her own mother." Kösel claimed that Fatma Girik had disinherited her brother, Günay Girik, after learning that he was involved in an extramarital affair.
FATMA GİRİK'S WEALTH AND STATEMENTS
In a 2017 interview, Fatma Girik stated that she was a tax record-holder and did not possess a vast fortune.
"During the time I hosted the 'Söz Fato'da' program on Kanal D, I paid 178 billion in taxes," Girik had said, adding that there was no inheritance left by her husband, only his books, which she donated to the Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University Library. Girik mentioned that she lived a modest life, owning one house, a car, and a few valuable items. She also added that she had 17 cats and 5 dogs.
