Often overlooked in kitchen cleaning, range hoods can pose a serious danger due to the accumulation of grease and dirt over time. Experts warn that these accumulations can increase the risk of fire.
Range hoods clean the kitchen air by filtering out grease, smoke, and moisture that mix into the air during cooking. However, without regular maintenance, these filters can become clogged and dangerous. Cleaning and food safety experts emphasize that this situation can increase the risk of both fires and respiratory problems, as well as foodborne illnesses.
Food scientist Dr. Bryan Quoc Le states that water droplets in food evaporate when they come into contact with hot surfaces during cooking, causing grease particles to spread into the air. These particles can accumulate in the range hood filter, leading to blockages and thick layers of grease. Le states that these accumulations can cause fires in the kitchen and lead to health problems by irritating the respiratory tract.
ISSA-certified hygiene expert Sabrina Tretyakova notes that grease and dirt block the circulation of fresh air, which can aggravate respiratory issues, especially asthma or allergies. She also says that damp and dirty environments encourage the growth of bacteria and mold, making regular cleaning essential.
Experts recommend deep cleaning range hoods once a month or every few months, depending on the frequency of use. It is stated that the outer surface should be wiped with a microfiber cloth and a degreasing spray, while the inner surface and fan blades should be cleaned with a mixture of vinegar and water. It is advised to clean the filters by soaking them in hot, soapy water and to replace carbon filters every three to six months.
Disconnecting the device from the power supply before cleaning is important for safety. Additionally, if excessive grease buildup is noticed in the ventilation ducts, it is recommended to seek professional cleaning services. Such regular maintenance increases the efficiency of the device, extends its lifespan, and maximizes hygiene and safety in the kitchen.
