A study published in the journal "The Lancet" addressed the rising prevalence of mental illnesses among young people.
The research, which included contributions from experts from many countries, pointed out that intergenerational inequality, the widespread use of social media, precarious employment, and the climate crisis have led to a "dangerous and alarming" global increase in mental illnesses among youth.
The study noted that mental illnesses account for 45 percent of health problems seen in individuals aged 10-24, while only 2 percent of global health budgets are allocated to services in this field.
'THE SITUATION HAS REACHED A DANGEROUS STAGE'
The research indicated that "mental illness is the primary threat to the health and well-being of young people," stating that the situation has reached a "dangerous stage."
Researcher Patrick McGorry emphasized that this increase is the "most serious public health issue," stating, "If this rapid deterioration in health were in another area, such as diabetes or cancer, effective measures would have been taken by governments."
Another researcher, Srividya Iyer, noted, "The neglect of youth mental health is partly due to a lack of sufficient investment in mental health, and this is a problem we see all over the world."
