Doğukan Özkan, who advocates that the Earth is flat rather than geoid-shaped and who continued his activities under the Flat Earth Association (Düz Dünya Derneği) he founded in 2018, has applied to the municipality to have 27039 Street in the Tepebağ neighborhood of the Seyhan district named 'Flat Earth Street'.
Özkan, who has continued to pursue his claim with his own circle since the association closed in 2022, posed in the street where the name change is expected, wearing flat-earth t-shirts and holding a flat-earth sign. Having submitted the petition to the municipality for the street's name to be changed to 'Flat Earth' with the participation of approximately 25 local shopkeepers, Özkan is now awaiting the municipality's approval.
Özkan, who has advocated for years that the Earth is flat, previously made headlines when he applied to the court to change his own name to "Flat Earth".
THEY COLLECTED SIGNATURES FROM SHOPKEEPERS
Stating that he has been a shopkeeper on the street for 26 years, former Flat Earth Association President Doğukan Özkan said, "We believe in a flat earth. As flat earthers, we thought of naming our street 'Flat Earth' both to bring a change and beauty to our street and to provide a change for the shopkeepers."
Stating that he collected signatures from approximately 25 shopkeepers for the street's new name, Özkan said, "The shopkeepers already believed in me. They trust my word. By making a small explanation, we collected the necessary signatures from many shopkeepers at once. I told them, 'We are going to change the name of the street to Flat Earth.' They were very happy, they liked it a lot. They said, 'That would be very good.' This street is normally both known and unknown. Starting from this, we had such an idea to officially change the name of the street, both to have a nice event for flat earthers and to improve the business of our shopkeepers and the neighborhood, and to develop it in terms of tourism," he said.
'IT WILL BE A FIRST IN THE WORLD'
Arguing that if the street is named 'Flat Earth' it will go down in history as a first in the world, Özkan said, "This will be a first not only in Turkey but in the world. If the name of this place changes to 'Flat Earth', the local shopkeepers, even before me, are saying that interest will increase and even people who don't know this street will come here," he said.
Neighborhood barber Güray Koruloğlu said, "Doğukan brother is already a sensational man. He really loves the flat earth. He advocated for it, he focused on it. We supported him too. We already love Doğukan brother. We didn't see any harm in changing the name of the street. I think it was good. We support the change. This is a historic street. We want people to pass through and more people to stop by here. There will definitely be those who advocate for a flat earth, as well as those who want to come saying 'I wonder what's there'," he stated.
