From engineering to the skies: Turkish female pilot for the world's largest passenger aircraft

Gökçe Kübra Turan Yıldırım, who became the first Turkish woman to sit in the captain's seat of the Airbus A380, the world's largest passenger aircraft, emphasized that leaving her engineering career behind to follow her passion for aviation led to this achievement.

Born and raised in Ankara, Yıldırım cut her engineering education short to step into the world of aviation she had dreamed of.

Captain pilot Yıldırım recounted her inspiring journey to becoming a captain on the world's largest passenger aircraft.

Yıldırım, who began her education in Ankara, stated that after graduating from Nermin Mehmet Çekiç Anatolian High School, she completed her degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Bilkent University.

Subsequently starting a master's degree at Boğaziçi University, Yıldırım noted that she won a full scholarship to a university abroad, but explained the change in direction she experienced with the words: "However, my passion for aviation eventually led me to leave my engineering degree behind and join a pilot training program."

Expressing that she began her aviation adventure as an intern at Turkish Airlines, Yıldırım said, "I quickly realized that academia and working in an office environment were not for me. I also worked in the consulting sector, but the office environment was not suitable for me. I had the opportunity to intern at Turkish Airlines Technic, and there I began to develop a great interest in aircraft technology. My desire to be closer to the aviation world led me to a pilot training program. I never imagined that in my career in the skies, I would fly the Airbus A380, the world's largest passenger aircraft, at Emirates Airlines, but with hard work and determination, I reached this goal, and this is a great source of pride for me."

Describing the burden of being in the captain's seat of the Airbus A380, Yıldırım noted the following:

"Being an Airbus A380 captain is an incredible honor. Flying this aircraft is a unique experience. It is both exciting and extremely satisfying. The size and complexity of the aircraft require great skill and precision on the ground and in the air, especially on long-haul flights. The technology inside is incredible, but due to the size of the aircraft, extra attention and care are required at every stage from takeoff to landing. This job is not just about flying the plane. Managing the crew and ensuring everything runs smoothly is also a huge responsibility. The challenges encountered are one of the things that make this profession so satisfying. The responsibility is immense; ensuring the safety of the passengers and the crew is always the top priority."

Offering inspiring advice to women aiming for a career in aviation, Gökçe Kübra Turan Yıldırım stated the following:

"Although I did not set out with the goal of becoming the first Turkish female captain of the Airbus A380 at the beginning, I am proud to have reached this milestone. I hope my journey inspires other women to follow their dreams, no matter how big they may seem. My advice to women interested in aviation is simple; follow your passion. Aviation is a challenging field, but with perseverance, hard work, and a lot of dedication, women can definitely succeed. Do not let anything stop you, believe in yourself, seek mentors, keep learning, and do not give up even when the road gets tough."

Meanwhile, the Airbus A380 holds the title of the world's widest-body passenger aircraft with a capacity of 853 passengers. The giant aircraft, which is 79.4 meters long and weighs 560 tons, can operate on long-haul intercontinental flights.
