Akbayram, who contracted polio at nine months old and spent his childhood dealing with the illness, began his relationship with music by forming an orchestra at a young age.
HE FORMED AN ORCHESTRA DURING HIGH SCHOOL
Working as an amateur at a wedding hall near his home, Akbayram strengthened his ties to music during his high school years by composing pieces based on the sayings of Karacaoğlan and Pir Sultan in an orchestra he formed with his friends.
Akbayram's band, which he named 'Siyah Örümcekler' (Black Spiders), brought to life the song 'Kendim ettim kendim buldum' (I did it to myself, I found it myself), which was featured on his first record.
Having started his music career in Gaziantep and continuing there for a while, the second stop for Akbayram and the city where he performed was Adana.
HE WON A SPOT IN DENTISTRY
After graduating from high school in 1968, Akbayram went to Istanbul, took exams for his dream of becoming a doctor, and was accepted into the dentistry department.
Forced to choose between dentistry and music, Akbayram chose music and participated in the Golden Microphone Competition in 1971. The master artist won first place in the competition with 'Kükredi Çimenler' (The Grasses Roared), his first composition inspired by a poem by Aşık Veysel.
Having founded the Dostlar Orchestra in 1974, Akbayram became one of the leading names in Anatolian pop music and gained a wide fan base.
"WHETHER THEY SEND ME OFF WITH APPLAUSE OR WITH FLOWERS..."
The master artist, who had nearly 250 awards, passed away the other evening. Edip Akbayram could not be saved from the intensive care unit where he was admitted after falling at home 52 days ago and suffering an internal hemorrhage.
It has emerged that in an interview given years ago, Edip Akbayram, whose death has left his loved ones in mourning, used the following expressions regarding his funeral ceremony:
"These are the thoughts that pass through the minds of my friends and loved ones who will bid me farewell on my final journey. Whether they send me off with applause, whether they send me off with flowers, or whether they send me off by doing nothing at all. It is an improvisational event at that moment, that is."
HE WILL BE LAID TO REST TOMORROW
Edip Akbayram will be laid to rest following the funeral ceremony to be held tomorrow.
After a memorial ceremony to be held at the Cemal Reşit Rey Concert Hall at 11:00, the funeral prayer will be performed at Teşvikiye Mosque following the noon prayer.
The artist will then be buried in the Karacaahmet Cemetery in Üsküdar.
