In most cities or countries around the world, individuals who benefit from accommodation or tourism-related services are charged a tax—either as a flat fee or as a percentage of the service cost—to help finance the public portion of these services that the central government covers.
In some countries and cities, this tax is only collected from foreign tourists, while in others, it is collected from both foreign tourists and domestic citizens traveling within the country.
WHICH DESTINATIONS WILL IMPLEMENT A TOURIST TAX IN 2025?
NEW ZEALAND
New Zealand has tripled its tourist entry tax, increasing it from 35 New Zealand dollars to 100 New Zealand dollars. In addition to the tax, tourist visa fees will also increase from 131 dollars to 211 dollars starting October 1st.
THAILAND
Thailand is planning a travel tax that, if approved, will come into effect in 2025.
If implemented, the tax will be approximately 6.87 pounds for those arriving by plane.
UNITED KINGDOM
Starting in 2023, the United Kingdom introduced a new system called ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) for tourists arriving from Qatar. This application later made it mandatory for tourists from countries such as Canada, the USA, and Australia to apply for permission and make a payment to enter the country. From April 2025, European citizens will also need an Electronic Travel Authorisation to travel to the United Kingdom.
ITALY
It has been announced that in Venice, one of Italy's popular tourist cities, the day-tripper tax will be expanded in 2025, the number of days tourists must pay to enter the city will be increased, and the fee for last-minute visitors will be doubled to 10 euros.
The tax amount in Italy generally varies depending on the destination. While the fee in Rome ranges from 3 euros to 7 euros per night depending on the room type, some smaller cities may charge higher fees.
RUSSIA
Russia is also among the countries that will implement a tourist tax in 2025. This new tax will be applied by local governments through their own legal regulations. The tax will be implemented in the cities of Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Sevastopol according to the laws of these regions, and in the Sirius federal territory according to the regulations of the representative body. In 2025, this tax will be 1 percent of the cost of services in hotels and other accommodation facilities, and it will be increased by 1 percent each year until 2029. From 2029 onwards, this rate will not exceed 5 percent.
GREECE
Greece is one of the countries taking additional measures to avoid the negative effects of overtourism. The taxes paid here depend on the standard of the accommodation. It is usually around 3.5 pounds per night.
GERMANY
In Germany, the tourist tax is collected per night, based on per-person amounts or as a percentage of the accommodation price. It ranges from 0.50 euros to 5.00 euros or is 5% of the accommodation price.
FRANCE
The tax collected in France is charged per person at a rate between 1% and 5% of the accommodation cost. While 1 euro is charged for campsite stays, the tax can go up to 10 euros for 5-star hotel stays.
NETHERLANDS
In the Netherlands, the amount of tourist tax varies by municipality. With the tourism tax, which corresponds to 7 percent of the hotel room price, being increased to 12.5 percent, it is estimated that the capital, Amsterdam, will have the highest tourism tax in Europe.
SPAIN
In Spain, the tourist tax varies between €0.45 and €4.00. The tax is charged based on per-person amounts, taking into account the duration of the overnight stay.
BULGARIA
In Bulgaria, the tourist tax varies according to hotel standards and the destination, but it is generally under 1.30 pounds.
JAPAN
In Japan, 1000 yen must be paid as a tourist tax. In Tokyo, the tourist tax applies to all foreign and Japanese customers staying in accommodation facilities where the per-person nightly price, excluding meals, is 10,000 yen or more. The tax amount is 100 yen per night for people staying in hotels with prices ranging from 10,000 to 14,999 yen, and 200 yen per night for people staying in places with prices of 15,000 yen and above.
BELGIUM
In Belgium, the tourist tax is applied for every night you stay. In Vienna or Salzburg, you pay an extra 3.02 percent on top of the per-person hotel bill. In Brussels, the tourist tax is also mostly under 3.50 pounds.
CROATIA
Croatia increased its tourism tax in 2019. This rate only applies during the peak season in the summer months. Arriving tourists pay approximately 10 kuna per person per night.
