WHO IS MUAZZEZ İLMİYE ÇIĞ?
Sumerologist, scientist, and historian Muazzez İlmiye Çığ was born on June 20, 1914, in Bursa.
During the years of the War of Independence, her family settled in Çorum, where she began primary school, but the family returned to Bursa when she reached the fifth grade. She took French and violin lessons at a private school called Bizim Mektep. In 1926, she entered the Girls' Teachers' School (Kız Muallim Mektebi). Graduating in 1931, Çığ began teaching like her father and was appointed to Eskişehir.
At the request of Atatürk, she entered the Sumerology department of the Ankara Faculty of Language, History and Geography in 1935. Graduating in 1940, Çığ was appointed to the Istanbul Archaeology Museums. Here, she accomplished work of great global importance by creating and cataloging an archive of cuneiform documents written in Sumerian, Akkadian, and Hittite languages.
Through her work with Prof. Kramer, Head of the Tablet Section at the University of Pennsylvania Museum, new topics were introduced to Sumerian literature, and missing pieces were completed.
In 1940, she married Kemal Çığ, whom she had attended school with. Her first daughter, Yülmen, was born that same year, and her second daughter, Esin, was born in 1947.
In 1960, she conducted research for 6 months at Heidelberg University upon their invitation.
In 1965, she chaired the Hittite exhibition displayed in Rome and took the exhibition to London. She continued her work during her short stay in London.
She retired from the Archaeology department in 1972 but continued her work and research. In 1988, Çığ attended the Philadelphia Assyriology Congress and translated Prof. Dr. S. N. Kramer's book titled "History Begins at Sumer".
Muazzez İlmiye Çığ was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in 2000.
As one of the most important researchers of Sumerian and Hittite cultures, Muazzez İlmiye Çığ wrote thirteen books and numerous scientific articles.
