Social media has become an inseparable part of modern life with billions of users worldwide.
According to July 2024 data, there are 5.17 billion social media users globally, a figure that accounts for 63.7% of the world's population.
With an average of 8.9 new users added every second, social media has become a primary target for hackers.
According to statements by Alev Akkoyunlu, Bitdefender Antivirus Turkey representative, the most effective methods for users to protect their social media accounts from hackers were shared.
The activities of cybercriminals on social media are becoming increasingly complex.
Users are left in danger through many different methods, ranging from social engineering techniques to the creation of fake accounts.
Hackers can commit fraud by seizing personal information and can steal accounts to use them for sharing spam content or malicious links.
Moreover, since social media users often use the same passwords across multiple platforms, a security vulnerability occurring in one account can put other accounts at risk as well.
Stating that social media users must be careful and increase their security measures to protect themselves from such threats, Alev Akkoyunlu shared the most effective ways for users to protect their social media accounts from hackers.
COMMON HACKING METHODS USED AGAINST SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTS
1. Phishing Attacks
Phishing is a method where cybercriminals use fake emails or messages, appearing as a trusted source. These criminals aim to trick users into sharing their login credentials or clicking on a malicious link that compromises their accounts. Phishing attacks often target influencers by imitating brands, sponsorship deals, and even platform notifications.
2. Credential Stuffing
This method involves using stolen login information (from data breaches or leaks) to gain access to social media accounts. Social media enthusiasts who use the same passwords on different platforms are at particularly higher risk for such attacks.
3. Brute Force Attacks
Hackers use automated tools to try thousands of different password combinations until they guess the account password. Weak or common passwords make users an easy target for brute force attacks.
4. Malware and Keyloggers
Malware can be installed on devices through malicious downloads, email attachments, or drive-by downloads. Once malicious software like remote access trojans is installed, it monitors keystrokes, allowing cybercriminals to capture users' passwords and gain access to their accounts.
5. Session Hijacking
When users utilize public or unsecured Wi-Fi networks, cybercriminals can hijack their sessions to access social media accounts. By intercepting data transmitted between the device and the network, hackers can gain access to users' sessions without needing login credentials.
METHODS TO PROTECT SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTS FROM HACKERS
1. Use Strong and Unique Passwords
The most important defense against hackers and account takeovers is to create a strong and unique password for every account. Avoid using birth dates, common words, or easily guessable phrases. Instead, opt for long and random combinations that include letters, numbers, and symbols.
2. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)
Two-factor authentication provides an extra layer of security to your account by requiring you to confirm your identity via a second method (usually through a code sent to your phone) after entering your password. This method makes it much harder for hackers to reach your account even if they obtain your login credentials (email address and password combination).
3. Be Careful Against Phishing Scams
Always double-check the sender before clicking on links in emails or messages. Avoid downloading attachments from unknown senders or clicking on suspicious links. Hover over links to see the actual URL before clicking, and if you are unsure, go directly to the website in question instead of using the link.
4. Keep Your Software Updated
Outdated software can contain security vulnerabilities that hackers can exploit. Regularly update your operating system, browser, and applications to ensure security patches are applied.
5. Use a VPN When on Public Wi-Fi
Public Wi-Fi networks are known for dangers that make it easier for hackers to intercept your data. Use a VPN service to encrypt your internet connection and prevent your data from being stolen while using open networks.
6. Limit Third-Party App Access
Many social media platforms allow you to log in to third-party applications. However, every app you allow to access your social media accounts increases your risk of exposure to hackers. Regularly audit the apps that have access to your account and revoke unnecessary permissions.
