While the expectation for a raise in pension salaries continues across the country, the beloved name of Turkish cinema, Halil Ergün, has resonated with the public through his criticisms of the economic situation. Responding to journalists' questions during an event, Ergün emphasized the gap between parliamentary salaries and pension payments.
Stressing that it is impossible for retirees to make ends meet with the salaries they receive, the master actor argued that the state must take urgent steps on this issue. Ergün stated that it is not fair for retirees to be tested with 19 thousand liras in an environment where parliamentary salaries have reached 273 thousand liras:
"This situation is truly shameful! What is 19 thousand liras? How are people going to survive on this money?"
While the lowest pension salary, which is approximately 16,881 TL, is expected to rise to approximately 18,939 TL with the inflation adjustment, Ergün emphasized that these figures are insufficient for living under today's conditions. Highlighting that purchasing power is steadily declining, the artist revealed the hardship being experienced by giving an example from his own shopping:
"I went shopping just today; I paid 450 TL for just 5 large tomatoes. If I am struggling while paying this amount, what will those people with limited budgets do? It is impossible to remain silent in the face of this picture."
