İlyas Salman's reaction to the 'Şaban' controversy

Veteran Yeşilçam actor İlyas Salman has reacted to Milliyet columnist Zafer Şahin's targeting of Kemal Sunal, in which Şahin stated, "The first character that comes to mind when we think of Kemal Sunal is İnek Şaban. They caricaturized a beautiful name like Şaban. It should be researched how many people continued to name their children Şaban after these films." Salman responded, saying, "There is no beauty left that you haven't attacked, including the film characters created without any ill intent and the pure and clear memory of Yeşilçam."

The targeting of Rıfat Ilgaz, one of the cornerstones of Turkish literature, by renowned theologian Fatih Çıtlak over the "Şaban" character had previously become a public issue. Çıtlak had used the expressions, "The so-called humorist who came out of Kastamonu made fun of the name Şaban. No traitor has ever come out of Kastamonu, yet you made people mock the name Şaban. Look, for 20–30 years, no one has been naming their children Şaban. That sin is enough for him."

A video in which Milliyet columnist Zafer Şahin made similar criticisms over the "Şaban" character was shared on social media.
