It had dominated Turkey's agenda: Sentence reduced for courier who subjected women to falaka

In Kayseri, the sentence given to the defendant in the falaka case was overturned by the appellate court.

It was alleged that Erkan T., who worked at a cargo company in Melikgazi, invited women in financial distress to his home, placed sleep masks over their eyes, tied their feet with handcuffs and scarves, and subjected them to falaka.

It was claimed that Erkan T. paid 500 TL to the women he subjected to falaka whom he deemed "beautiful," and 250 TL to those he deemed "ugly."

Following a criminal complaint filed by a woman named N.K., to whom he had made a similar offer, Erkan T. was taken into custody and later released under judicial control.

LAWSUIT FILED

A public lawsuit was filed against Erkan T. at the Kayseri 18th Criminal Court of First Instance, seeking a prison sentence of 2 to 5 years for the crime of tormenting his spouse, H.T., and 1 to 4 years for the crime of obscenity.

In the 3rd hearing of the case held in April last year, the defendant Erkan T. was sentenced to 2 years and 1 month in prison for the crime of obscenity, with a good conduct reduction applied, while he was acquitted of the charge of tormenting his spouse due to insufficient evidence.

APPELLATE COURT FOUND THE SENTENCE EXCESSIVE

The appellate court found the sentence given to the courier in Kayseri, who reached agreements with women in financial difficulty for money and subjected them to falaka, to be excessive.

In the retrial, Erkan T.'s sentence was reduced from 2 years and 1 month to 1 year, 6 months, and 22 days, and it was decided to defer the announcement of the verdict.
