Scientists have discovered a species of creature with an "alien face" and more than 200 legs on a mountain in Tanzania. This discovery was announced in a research report published in the European Journal of Taxonomy.

Researchers were conducting work in the Udzungwa Mountains in Tanzania as part of a Forest Restoration and Climate Experiment. This project aimed to assess the health of the forests in the region. While checking pitfall traps, the researchers identified many millipedes that did not match any known records.

Upon closer examination of these millipedes, the researchers realized they were a new species. This species was named Udzungwastreptus marianae, or the Marian millipede. It is noted that Marian millipedes can have up to 44 body segments and reach a length of approximately 4.3 cm. Furthermore, it was observed that these creatures have a spirally coiled yellow body with small eyes and short antennae.

Co-author of the study, Andrew Marshall, described the new species as having "about 200 legs" and an "alien face." The researchers stated that they named the new species after the Spanish zoologist María Ángeles (Marian) Ramos, who passed away in 2023.
