Füruzan, a master of contemporary Turkish literature who won the 1972 Sait Faik Short Story Award with her first book, Parasız Yatılı (Boarding School for Free), has passed away at the age of 91.
The news of Füruzan's death was announced by poet Elif Sofya with the words, "Füruzan has gone to eternity."
MEMORIAL CEREMONY TO BE HELD
Her publisher, Yapı Kredi Yayınları, will hold a memorial ceremony for the master author on Wednesday, February 14, at 11:00 AM at the Yapı Kredi Culture and Arts Loca.
Füruzan will be laid to rest in Hacıbektaş, Nevşehir, on Friday, February 16.
WHO IS FÜRUZAN?
Born Feruze Çerçi in Istanbul on October 29, 1932, Füruzan was known for never using her surname throughout her writing career.
Her stories have been translated into many languages, including French, Spanish, Persian, Italian, Japanese, English, Russian, Bulgarian, and Bosnian. Her stories were collected and translated into Italian by A. Saraçgil and published in Naples in 1991.
Her novel Kırk Yedi’liler (The Forty-Seveners) was published in Bulgaria in 1986 in a translation by S. Pirvanova. Her stories Sevda Dolu Bir Yaz (A Summer Full of Love), Nehir (The River), and İskele Parklarında (In the Pier Parks) were published in London in 2001 in English translations by Damian Craft.
Füruzan, whose collected stories are currently being translated into Spanish by Gül Işık, prepared the anthology Dokuz Çağdaş Türk Öykücüsü (Nine Contemporary Turkish Storytellers, 1982, Volk und Welt Verlag) and the children's book Die Kinder der Türkei (1979, Kinderbuch Verlag) during her time as a guest in East Berlin. She received honorary awards at the Language Festival organized by the Language Association and the Antalya Story Days in 2007, and at the 7th Izmir Story Days in 2008. She was selected as the "Guest of Honor" at the 2008 Istanbul Book Fair.
The film Benim Sinemalarım (My Cinemas), which she directed between 1988 and 1990, was selected as one of the eight films out of 158 to be screened at the 1990 Cannes Film Festival, receiving invitations in the "Critics' Week" and "Golden Camera" categories. In 1991, it won the "Special Jury Prize for Best First Film" from the International Jury at the International Fajr Film Festival in Iran.
In 1991, it was included among the "Ten Best Asian Films" selected at the Tokyo International Film Festival.
In 1994, Füruzan compiled her travels to Bosnia-Herzegovina, Greece, and Bulgaria in her book Balkan Yolcusu (Balkan Traveler). Her stage adaptation of Sevda Dolu Bir Yaz was performed approximately 200 times at the Ankara State Theaters between 2000 and 2005.
