Rising malaria risk in tropical regions: Travelers must be cautious
The rise in malaria cases in tropical regions poses a serious health threat to travelers. This disease, which begins with a high fever, can lead to fatal consequences if left untreated.

Malaria is known as a dangerous disease that manifests with symptoms such as high fever, chills, loss of consciousness, and multi-organ failure. Common in tropical regions, this disease affects thousands of people every year.
Although Turkey has brought malaria under control in the past, the disease is back on the agenda due to cases arriving from abroad. Prof. Dr. Bahadır Ceylan provided information about the transmission routes of malaria and the serious consequences that can arise if it is not treated.
MOSQUITOES AND SWAMPY AREAS POSE A DANGER
Stating that malaria is transmitted through Anopheles mosquitoes, the expert doctor explained that these mosquitoes breed in swamps, rivers, and stagnant water. Reminding that this mosquito species is also present in Turkey and that malaria cases were frequently encountered in the past, Ceylan said that with the treatment and control of the disease, Turkey became one of the countries that eradicated malaria.
WARNING FOR THOSE RETURNING FROM TROPICAL REGIONS
The expert stated that most malaria cases seen in Turkey are detected in individuals arriving from tropical regions, and explained that high fever reaching 40 degrees develops as a result of the parasite multiplying and destroying cells. He stated that this situation overstimulates the immune system, causing damage to organs and leading to failure in the heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys. He emphasized that those returning from abroad should immediately consult health institutions if they experience symptoms such as chills and fever.
EARLY INTERVENTION IS CRITICAL
Pointing out that malaria can lead to fatal results if not treated, Ceylan stated that medication to eliminate the parasite must be started quickly. Otherwise, he noted, a chain reaction that could result in multi-organ failure and death could begin. He said that especially those traveling to tropical regions should be conscious and take symptoms into account.
