In the city of Shanghai, China, a woman surnamed Liu changed her will because her children neglected her as she aged, while her pets offered her unconditional companionship.
According to reports in Chinese local media, a local veterinary clinic was appointed as the administrator of the inheritance due to legal difficulties in China that prevent direct inheritance by animals. Liu wanted to leave her entire fortune to her pets, but this is not legal in China.
Liu's exact age is not known. Reports refer to her as an "elderly" woman. It was also reported that she was angry with her children because they did not visit her even when she was ill.
Chen Kai, from the Will Registration Center in Beijing, told the press that "there are alternatives to solve this problem," adding, "We advised Liu to appoint a person she trusts to supervise the veterinary clinic to ensure that the pets are properly cared for."
The incident has sparked discussions about family dynamics and inheritance practices in China.
This is not the first time people have left inheritances to their pets. In 2007, hotelier Leona Helmsley left $12 million in a trust fund for the care of her Maltese dog, Trouble.
