Despite opposition from the church, Greece became the first Christian Orthodox-majority country to legalize same-sex marriage. The law, voted on in 2024, passed in parliament with 176 votes in favor and 76 against.
Same-sex couples in the country will now also be legally permitted to adopt children.
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis argued that this step has eliminated a "serious inequality."
