The 'real Martha' from Baby Reindeer files $170 million lawsuit against Netflix

Fiona Harvey, who claims to be the person behind the Martha Scott character in Netflix's hit series 'Baby Reindeer', has filed a $170 million lawsuit against the platform.

According to a report in The Guardian, Fiona Harvey filed the lawsuit on Thursday, accusing Netflix of defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligence, gross negligence, and violations of her right of publicity.

The lawsuit included the following statements:

"The lies that the defendants told about Harvey to over 50 million people worldwide include that Harvey is a twice-convicted stalker who was sentenced to five years in prison and that Harvey sexually assaulted Gadd. The defendants told these lies, and never stopped, because it was a better story than the truth, and better stories made money.

Netflix, a multinational, billion-dollar entertainment streaming company, did literally nothing to confirm the 'true story' that Gadd told. That is, it never investigated whether Harvey was convicted, which is a very serious distortion of the facts.

It did nothing to understand the relationship, if any, between Gadd and Harvey... As a result of the defendants' lies, malfeasance, and utter reckless misconduct, Harvey's life has been ruined. Simply put, Netflix and Gadd destroyed her reputation, her character, and her life."

Harvey is seeking at least $50 million in actual damages, at least $50 million in compensatory damages for 'mental anguish and loss of business', at least $50 million for 'all profits from Baby Reindeer', and $20 million in punitive damages.
