It has been 19 years since the 'rebellious child' of the Black Sea passed away

Kazım Koyuncu, who passed away on June 25, 2005, at the hospital where he was receiving treatment, is being commemorated on the 19th anniversary of his death. Koyuncu, who lost his life at the age of 33, had his words about earthquakes from years ago become a trending topic on social media once again.

Although his official birth date is May 10, 1972, due to a late registration, Kazım Koyuncu was born on November 7, 1971, in Yeşilköy, a village in the Hopa district of Artvin, as the fifth of Cavit Bey and Hüsniye Hanım's six children.

Growing up listening to fairy tales from his grandmother and folk songs from Yaşar Turna, known by the nickname "Kemençeci Yaşar" (Yaşar the Fiddle Player), Koyuncu's father provided for the family by working as a grocer and barber in Hopa.

In a statement about his childhood days, Koyuncu expressed how his father's traits were reflected in him, saying, "Because my father was a reader, I became different from the other children."

WHO IS KAZIM KOYUNCU?

Kazım Koyuncu (November 7, 1971, Hopa, Artvin - June 25, 2005, Istanbul) was a Laz-origin Turkish musician, songwriter, actor, and activist who created his own style by synthesizing Eastern Black Sea and Laz music with rock music.

He was introduced to music at a very young age. He moved to Istanbul in the late 1980s. He first started playing amateur rock music. In the early 1990s, he began giving small-scale concerts in various places with his friends. In 1994, he created his own style by combining Laz music with rock music. That same year, he decided to form a band with his friends called Zuğaşi Berepe. In 1995, the band released their first album, titled Va Mişkunan. Since it was a style heard for the first time, the album received positive reactions.

In 1998, they released their second album, İgzas. The album made more of an impact than the first. After this album, the band broke up. In the early 2000s, Kâzım Koyuncu went to do his military service. After returning from the military, he began working on his first solo album. In 2001, he released his first solo album, titled Viya!.

In 2002, he began composing the music for the television series Gülbeyaz together with Gökhan Birben. At the same time, he acted in some episodes of the series. The series' music received great attention. Later, Kâzım Koyuncu began to be recognized across Turkey. His concerts were watched by large crowds.

In 2003, he began recording his second solo album. In 2004, he released his second album, titled Hayde. The second album reached a much higher sales figure than the first. It became one of the best-selling albums of the year. At the end of 2004, he received the news that he had cancer. His family and loved ones were deeply saddened by the news.

Although doctors told him not to overexert himself, Kâzım Koyuncu continued to give concerts. In 2005, he gave his final concert at Karadeniz Technical University.

On June 25, 2005, he died in Şişli at the age of 33 as a result of testicular cancer spreading to his lungs.
