Jose and Kitty Menendez were shot multiple times at close range in their Beverly Hills mansion on August 20, 1989. The brothers, who were 21 and 18 at the time, claimed they found their parents dead when they arrived home. In court, the Menendez brothers claimed they had been subjected to years of emotional and sexual abuse and argued that the murders were in self-defense.
According to the report in BBC Turkish, the pair were convicted of first-degree murder in 1996. They were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Erik and Lyle Menendez, now 53 and 56, have been in prison in San Diego, California, for 28 years. Commenting on the production via his wife's X account, Erik Menendez called the series a "sad slander" and continued:
"I thought we had moved past the lies and the character profile created for Lyle. A caricature of Lyle has been created in the series based on horrible and blatant lies. It saddens me to know that Netflix's dishonest portrayal of the tragedies that are the cause of our crime has placed another barrier in front of the truth about the pain we experienced."
