Women take to the streets for Ummuhan, who was murdered for 'not cooking'!

Women held a protest in Köyceğiz at the call of the Women's Solidarity Committees for Ummuhan Korkut, who lost her life after being beaten by the man she was married to in Muğla.

On Tuesday, January 21, 2025, 25-year-old Ummuhan Korkut, a mother of two living in the Beyobası neighborhood of Köyceğiz, was beaten by her husband, Yunus Korkut, on the grounds that she "did not cook."

Korkut, whose condition worsened due to the blows she received, particularly to her head, as a result of the violence, was first taken to Köyceğiz State Hospital, then transferred to Muğla Sıtkı Koçman Training and Research Hospital, and finally to Ortaca Yücelen Hospital. Korkut, who was admitted to the intensive care unit at the hospital where she was taken, passed away on January 28.

'DOWN WITH YOUR ORDER'

Following Ummuhan Korkut's funeral ceremony at the Beyobası Cemetery on Wednesday, women from Köyceğiz and relatives of Ummuhan Korkut marched to the town center together with the Köyceğiz Women's Solidarity Committee. Throughout the march, the women chanted slogans such as "Let Ummuhan live. Down with your order," and "Women stand up. To tear down this order."

In the press statement made after the march, Çiğdem Ünal, one of the KDK Köyceğiz representatives, stated that they were filled with sadness and anger, saying, "The order that legitimizes violence against women and imposes the burden of domestic labor and obedience on women has taken another woman from among us."

'THIS IS THE CASE OF ALL WOMEN'

Pointing out that cases of violence against women and resulting deaths continue to increase under this order, Ünsal emphasized that violence is neither fate nor an isolated incident, and spoke as follows:

“The pressure and violence against women is a massive social problem in Turkey today. It cannot be explained by traditions and outdated habits. It cannot be reduced to isolated incidents and cannot be detached from its social foundation. Ummuhan's case is the case of all women.“

Stating that they will not remain silent against policies that try to condemn women to the home, to men, and to violence by calling it the "year of the family," Ünsal ended the press statement with these words:

“We will continue our struggle to live and to build an equal world. We will build together a country of women who are not left under the rubble in an earthquake, who do not burn on their vacations, who are not piled with all the chores when they come home, and who are not killed for not cooking. Once again, our condolences to all.”
