Vuslat Doğan and Ali Sabancı, who went through a long treatment process following their zodiac boat accident, have announced that they are ending their 29-year marriage. In their statement regarding the separation, they said of the accident, "At first, we thought this event would bring us closer and make us stronger. It didn't turn out that way."
The joint divorce statement issued by Ali Sabancı and Vuslat Doğan is as follows:
"We have ended our 29-year marriage. We celebrated life together and weathered many difficulties. We accumulated many beautiful memories. Most importantly, we raised two virtuous, intelligent, and kind-hearted children. In recent years, however, we began to experience difficulties in our relationship. It was as if one of us was in winter while the other was in summer... Even though we tried very hard, we could not meet in the same season. Then, one evening, the boat we were on as a family hit the rocks. We entered a difficult process that began with prayers and continued with a determination and effort to heal.
'AT FIRST, WE THOUGHT IT WOULD MAKE US STRONGER'
At first, we thought this event would bring us closer and make us stronger. It didn't turn out that way. One of us was able to return to normal life after a very difficult 3 months. The other, although not in life-threatening danger, entered a very difficult process that would continue for 2 years, progressing with slow steps.
Now that we have fully recovered, we have decided to end our marriage. We would like to express our endless gratitude to everyone who surrounded us with love, did not spare their prayers, and supported us wholeheartedly during these difficult times we have been through.
As we part ways today, there are three things we want to put on record: First, we have never held each other responsible for the accident, nor have we blamed one another. Second, we are separating without any financial demands from each other. Third, we will remain dear friends for a lifetime."
