12punto
Human beings are, by their nature, creatures with a need to believe. Every individual exists as a unity of body and soul, just as they carry a soul. One of the most fundamental characteristics of the soul, and one of its greatest needs, is the necessity to believe in a higher power. For this reason, religious belief holds an important place in human life. This belief can manifest itself in various ways among different societies and individuals.
What is Theism?
Theism is a system of thought that believes the universe was created and is governed by a God. According to this belief, God is the creator of everything and the fundamental source of the order in the universe. In theism, God is accepted as a supreme being who controls both the existence and the functioning of the universe.
What does Theism advocate?
Theism is derived from the Greek word "theos," meaning god. The English clergyman Ralph Cudworth was the first to use this term. Theism, also known as belief in God, posits that there is a god or multiple gods who created the universe. Theistic belief maintains that God can send religions to humanity.
According to theistic belief, God is in a constant relationship with the world and humanity. Therefore, God can influence the world in which humans live. God sends religions through prophets to guide humanity onto the right path.
What are the characteristics of Theism?
According to the ontological theory, God is flawless. The theory explains God's existence through His being competent, flawless, and perfect.
According to the theory of the emergence of existence, God is the creator. Everything that exists requires a being that created it. Since the universe also came into existence later in the process of time, it is God who created the universe.
The power of the Creator God is infinite. God's power is limitless and sufficient for everything. Although Aquinas and some philosophers have stated that God's power has certain limits, Descartes argued that God's power is completely unlimited.
God is all-knowing. God possesses absolute knowledge.
God is independent of physical time and space. God is a power that transcends the universe.
God is indescribable.
God is independent of all emotions.
Who is called a Theist?
People who believe that everything in the universe we live in was created by an infinite power for a specific purpose are called theists. Theists argue that the universe was created by the will of God. They believe in the religions sent by God or gods. Some theistic philosophers and thinkers include:
Von Schelling (1775- 1854)
Blaise Pascal (1623- 1662)
Nicholas of Cusa (1401- 1464)
Aristotle (384 B.C.- 322 B.C.)
Alfred North Whitehead (1861- 1947)
Theists argue that it is God, not the universe, that is eternal and everlasting.
