Born on October 14, 1925, in the Sarayköy district of Denizli, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Atlığ graduated from the Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine and specialized in X-ray diagnostics. He played the violin in the university choir, later becoming the conductor of this choir and the Director of Istanbul Radio (1955-1958).

While conducting the Istanbul Radio Small Choir, he was appointed as the conductor of the Classical Choir in 1963 following the passing of Mesut Cemil Bey. He held this position until 1976. He served as the President of the Turkish Music Research and Evaluation Commission of the Ministry of National Education, as a member of the 1000 Basic Works Commission, and as a member of the TRT Board of Directors.

In 1976, when the Ministry of Culture established the State Classical Turkish Music Choir, he was appointed as its conductor. He left his position as the Head of the Art Board and Turkish Music Instructor at the Istanbul Municipal Conservatory, where he had served for a quarter of a century. In 1981, he received the Ministry of Culture's achievement award in the field of Classical Turkish Music.

He was deemed worthy of the 1983 Turkish Culture Service Award by the Turkish National Culture Foundation. In 1983, he was elected as a member of the Atatürk Supreme Council for Culture, Language and History, and in 1984, he was appointed as a member of the Radio and Television Supreme Council. He received the title of "Professor" in 1985 and "State Artist" in 1987. In 1999, he was deemed worthy of the Presidential Culture and Arts Grand Award.

He was awarded the 2004 Ministry of Culture and Tourism Culture and Arts Grand Award. Having trained many musicians, Nevzat Atlığ served as a faculty member at the ITU Turkish Music State Conservatory for 30 years starting in 1985.

In addition to countless stage, radio, and TV concerts he conducted to date, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Atlığ has twenty CDs of musical recordings and five volumes of Turkish Music Classics sheet music publications.

Books published about him include "Nevzat Atlığ in His 50th Year of Art" by the Turkish Culture Service Foundation, "Nevzat Atlığ for Us to Take Pride in Our Music" by the Kubbe Altı Foundation, authored by Ergun Balcı, "Nevzat Atlığ in the Press", which consists of articles written by one hundred authors and writers published in the press since 1948 by the Bakırköy Conservatory Foundation, and "Our Recent Music History in the Testimony of Nevzat Atlığ", authored by Mehmet Güntekin.

Finally, Dr. Nevzat Atlığ was honored with the 2013 art award dedicated to Turkish Music by the Aydın Doğan Foundation and the 2018 Presidential Necip Fazıl Respect Award.

The artist and scientist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Atlığ, who packed unforgettable works into his nearly century-long life, donated all usage rights of his audio and visual archive recordings to the Istanbul University Ottoman Period Music Application and Research Center with a protocol signed in 2019.
