Curtains used for decorative purposes in homes can increase energy consumption and cause natural gas bills to rise if not chosen correctly. Experts say that the type and fabric of curtains can affect heat loss through windows, thereby increasing heating costs during the winter months.
Thin and unlined curtains allow heat to escape rapidly through glass surfaces, causing the boiler to run more frequently. This increases natural gas consumption and leads to higher bills. Furthermore, if curtains do not fully cover the window or are too short, it weakens thermal insulation.
CURTAIN SELECTION ADVICE FROM A BRITISH EXPERT
According to a report compiled by Sözcü, Dr. Sarah Lewis, who works on energy efficiency in the UK, draws attention to the importance of curtain selection. Lewis stated, "Windows are one of the biggest points of heat loss in homes. When thermal or thick, lined curtains are used, this loss can be significantly reduced, and natural gas consumption decreases."

Experts also warn that curtains should not block radiators. Dr. Lewis noted that long curtains covering radiators prevent warm air from circulating into the room, which causes the house to heat up more slowly. Energy experts recommend keeping curtains closed at night and leaving them open during the day on windows that receive sunlight.
