Scientists have discovered "zombie bacteria" that surprise with their survival abilities during research conducted underground on Earth. This discovery has sparked great interest in the scientific world.
As part of the Deep Carbon Observatory's research program, a group of scientists conducting underground excavations to study deep life beneath the Earth's crust made an intriguing finding. During the excavations, groups of bacteria capable of surviving in harsh conditions were discovered beneath the surface.
DISCOVERY OF ZOMBIE BACTERIA
These "zombie bacteria" were found in underground layers containing large amounts of carbon. According to findings shared at the American Geophysical Union's 2018 annual meeting, the research team collected samples by drilling at depths of 2.5 to 5 kilometers from the seafloor and various points across continents.
A NEW LOOK AT EARTH'S DEEP BIOSPHERE
Experts managed to create models of the biosphere hidden beneath the Earth's surface through their studies on these samples. The total area of this mysterious biosphere is estimated to be between 2 and 2.3 billion cubic kilometers. These findings offer new and exciting information about life deep within the Earth.
