Armed clash in Eskişehir: Gendarmerie specialist martyred

In an armed clash that occurred in Eskişehir, Gendarmerie Specialist Eighth Grade Sergeant Mehmet Demirbaş, a father of two daughters, was martyred. The assailant also lost his life in the incident, while a gendarmerie officer and a neighborhood headman were injured.

The incident took place in Narlı Neighborhood, located in the Mihalıççık district. According to the information obtained, gendarmerie teams were dispatched to the area following reports that İbrahim Günsel, who was alleged to have mental health issues, was firing a rifle at his surroundings. After the teams arrived at the scene, an armed clash broke out between the suspect and security forces.

Gendarmerie officer and father of two daughters martyred

Gendarmerie Specialist Eighth Grade Sergeant Mehmet Demirbaş, who was married and a father of two, was severely wounded in the incident and was martyred at the Mihalıççık State Hospital, where he had been taken. It was learned that Demirbaş had been serving in Eskişehir since 2017. In the clash, İbrahim Günsel, who was alleged to have opened fire, also lost his life at the scene. During the incident, a gendarmerie officer and Narlı Neighborhood Headman Mutlu Şahin were injured. Information was received that the treatments for the injured gendarmerie officer and the neighborhood headman are ongoing at the hospital.

Following the incident, extensive security measures were taken in the region, and a wide-ranging investigation was launched under the coordination of the Public Prosecutor's Office.

Minister of Interior Mustafa Çiftçi made a statement regarding the incident via his official social media account. In Minister Çiftçi's statement, the following expressions were included: "Gendarmerie Specialist Eighth Grade Sergeant Mehmet Demirbaş, serving under the Eskişehir Provincial Gendarmerie Command, was wounded while intervening in an incident and was martyred despite all interventions at the hospital where he was taken. I wish God's mercy upon our martyr; I extend my condolences to his grieving family, our heroic Gendarmerie organization, and our Nation. May our martyr's place be high."

It was learned that the martyred gendarmerie officer will be laid to rest tomorrow in the Terme district of Samsun.
