Chemical substance suspected in Karaman: 11-story building evacuated where couple was found dead in their home
AFAD has launched an investigation following an odor in the apartment of Namık and Fatma Özcan, a couple found dead in their home in Karaman, and the building has been evacuated.

It is suspected that a husband and wife found dead in an apartment in Karaman may have lost their lives due to a chemical substance. Following an odor emanating from the apartment, the 11-story building was evacuated as a precautionary measure.
The incident occurred at approximately 14:30 in an apartment on the 3rd floor of an 11-story residential complex located on 762nd Street in the Zembilli Ali Efendi neighborhood. When their children could not reach Namık Özcan (53) and his wife Fatma Özcan (45), they reported the situation to the 112 Emergency Call Center.
Upon the report, health, fire, and police teams were dispatched to the address. The teams that entered the apartment found the couple motionless. Upon noticing the smell of a chemical substance in the room, the teams exited the apartment and notified AFAD.
APARTMENT RESIDENTS EVACUATED FROM THE BUILDING
AFAD teams arriving at the scene conducted an inspection of the apartment using special protective clothing and equipment. While efforts to identify the chemical substance are ongoing, apartment residents were evacuated from the building for security reasons.
It was learned that the public prosecutor and crime scene investigation teams have not yet been able to carry out their work in the apartment due to the chemical risk. The apartment, which has had its doors and windows opened for ventilation, is expected to be inspected following further measurements.
The health, fire, and police personnel who first entered the apartment were also taken to Karaman Training and Research Hospital for check-ups as a precaution. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
