'Dialysis machine' crisis at Burdur State Hospital

Patients who underwent dialysis at Burdur State Hospital and fell ill after returning home were brought back to the hospital and subsequently transferred to surrounding hospitals.

While crime scene investigation teams conducted examinations in the dialysis unit, a crisis desk was established by the Burdur Governor's Office regarding the incident.

Many kidney patients who received treatment in the Dialysis Unit at Burdur State Hospital and were discharged fell ill in the evening and applied to the emergency department of the same hospital.

Following initial interventions in the emergency department, the patients were transferred to surrounding hospitals by ambulance. Crime scene investigation teams conducted examinations in the dialysis unit.

"THEY FELL ILL AFTER LEAVING DIALYSIS"

A situation assessment meeting was held at the crisis desk established at the Governor's Office, attended by Governor Türker Öksüz and Provincial Health Director Murat Erk.

Zeynep Ceylan, a relative of one of the patients who fell ill and applied to the hospital, said, "We brought my aunt to the hospital. She called me when she felt ill. I came here to help.

She has now been transferred to Bucak State Hospital. She had come for dialysis in the morning. She fell ill after leaving dialysis. She was having trouble speaking; that was the symptom. We came here just like the other patients. From here, they are transferring them to surrounding hospitals. Thank God, our patient's condition is good and she is conscious. I wish everyone a speedy recovery," she said.

STATEMENT FROM THE BURDUR GOVERNOR'S OFFICE REGARDING PATIENTS WHO FELL ILL AFTER DIALYSIS

The Burdur Governor's Office announced that 31 patients who fell ill at home following their dialysis procedure were recalled to the hospital for initial intervention, 23 patients were transferred to surrounding hospitals, and a judicial and administrative investigation has been initiated regarding the incident.

The statement from the Burdur Governor's Office said, "A total of 31 patients underwent dialysis at the Burdur State Hospital Dialysis Unit on Saturday, May 25, 2024. Upon some patients who had completed their dialysis and were transported home reporting symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, confusion, and inability to get out of the transport vehicle, all patients who underwent dialysis during the day were reached and recalled to the hospital.

Initial interventions for the 31 recalled patients were performed at the Burdur State Hospital Emergency Department, and a total of 23 patients were transferred to surrounding hospitals and dialysis centers, including 8 to Antalya province, 4 to Afyonkarahisar province, 3 to Isparta province, 4 to Bucak district, and 4 to a private dialysis center in the city center.


As a precaution, the Burdur State Hospital Dialysis Center has been closed, and a judicial and administrative investigation has been initiated. The process and the condition of the patients are being closely monitored, and we wish a speedy recovery to our patients whose treatments are ongoing," it was stated.
