Father who unplugged his SMA-patient child's device commits suicide

In the Derince district of Kocaeli, a father who unplugged the device his 12-year-old SMA-patient child was connected to subsequently committed suicide. While the child's intensive care treatment continues, the father, who lost his life, has been laid to rest.

The incident occurred yesterday at a home on Furkan Street in the Fatih Sultan neighborhood.

According to allegations, Soner A. unplugged the device to which his 12-year-old child, N.E.A., who suffers from spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), was connected. Soner A. then committed suicide by hanging himself.

Child's intensive care treatment continues

Upon relatives arriving at the home and noticing the situation, they reported it, leading to health and police teams being dispatched to the scene. Medical personnel determined that Soner A. had lost his life.

N.E.A., who faced a life-threatening situation due to the device being unplugged, was taken to Derince Training and Research Hospital following initial intervention at the scene.

It was learned that the 12-year-old child, who was subsequently transferred to Kocaeli City Hospital, continues to receive treatment in the intensive care unit.

Father laid to rest

The body of Soner A., which was taken to the morgue following the crime scene investigation and prosecutor's review, was delivered to his relatives after autopsy procedures were completed. The funeral was held at Derince Ulu Mosque, after which he was laid to rest at Çınarlı Martyrdom Cemetery.

The investigation launched into the incident is ongoing.
